Clomid Ovulation Induction is one of the most popular fertility treatments, especially for women having ovulation difficulty – one of the major problems most women encounter. Clomiphene has proven to be effective in helping achieve ovarian fertility.

Ovulation is a process that is cyclic in nature. It involves ovarian follicles that are present in women of reproductive age. A mature ovarian follicle pops-up and releases an ovum or an “egg” basically. This process occurs as a response to the release of certain hormones from the pituitary or master gland.

The hormones involved are the Luteinizing Hormone and the Follicle Stimulating Hormone. The released egg is then received into the fallopian duct for fertilization by uniting with sperm.

There are certain conditions that may inhibit ovulation and cause infertility in women. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is one common condition of infertility in women. This condition is characterized by the presence of numerous, small cystic masses or bodies in the ovaries.

The cysts are fluid filled bodies that have a profound effect on a woman’s capacity to produce mature egg that could be ovulated.

Most of the time, women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PSC) are the ones who need to be induced for ovulation, since their ovaries always fail to produce follicle. If ovaries cannot produce follicle, then maturity and release of egg will be impossible.

Some women experience a failure in ovulation because the ovaries lack proper exposure to produce luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland.

The decreased levels of these hormones could be due to problems with the pituitary itself or could be a result of stressful situations. Clomid Ovulation Induction is therefore advised to women who have these difficulties with ovulation.

Clomid Ovulation Induction simply helps the ovaries to be active and produce follicles. This is a treatment which should be closely monitored. One mistake in implementing this may put you back to square one or cause some undesirable complications.

The Clomid Ovulation Induction Process

Ovulation Induction is one of the popular treatments for infertility due to problems in ovulation, especially Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PSC).

One orally administered drug used to jumpstart, stimulate or regulate the ovulation process is Clomiphene Citrate or Clomid.

Before buying a Clomid pill, there should be a prescription from a fertility doctor or gynecologist. In taking Clomiphene, you will need to take your prescribed number of pills from the second day of menstruation. You may need to take 1-4 pills a day depending on the prescription of the doctor. Clomiphene can be taken anytime within the day.

Clomid acts on the brain basically. It makes the brain think that there is not enough estrogen being produced. This is done by its effects at the hypothalamic gland, and ability to connect and inhibit estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. This clomid activity, initiates a negative feedback mechanism on estrogen by causing the hypothalamus to assume there’s lower estrogen levels, and in turn release GnRH.

The GnRH causes the pituitary to increase FSH production. The increased FSH causes the ovum or egg to mature and subsequently be released, making it available for ovulation.

While taking the Clomid Ovulation Induction, the doctor will now require the patient to undergo the mid cycle scan. This is the period wherein there will be a constant monitoring on the reaction of the ovary to Clomiphene Citrate. The gynecologist will use the sonogram to check the ovaries if it really reacts positively with Clomid.

Alongside with Clomid Ovulation Induction, the doctor may also require the patient to take other supplements, such as HCG, which can help boost ovarian function. This is a fertility drug that urges the ovary to release more mature eggs.

With this medication, the gynecologist is also expected to prescribe a schedule on when the woman should undergo sexual intercourse. It implies that clomid induction involves a combination of proper medications, monitoring, and timing.

Caveats:

It’s advised that your partner must have undertaken a semen analysis and every other male infertility issue must have been completely ruled out, else Clomid or any other ovulation stimulant medication will amount to a waste of time and money. The truth is that clomid will have to work with right quality and quantity of sperm.

In addition, if a woman has a history of pelvic infection or other problem like blocked fallopian tubes, she should see a fertility specialist for necessary therapies and treatment to make clomid induction successful.

Another major setback to “clomidability” to induce ovulation is age. Ovarian reserve declines in older women and so will fertility and effectiveness of Clomid decrease. Again, you must see a fertility specialist as soon as possible to prescribe you the most effective treatments and appropriate therapies for declining ovarian reserve.

Side Effects of Clomid Ovulation Induction

Although Clomid Ovulation Induction is found to be very beneficial, there are some noted possible side effects associated with the use of Clomiphene citrate and they vary from woman to woman. However, overdose or overuse of clomid is the most singular cause of side effects.

Some side effects can just be felt by patients who are sensitive to medications. The possible side effects include bloating, altered cervical mucus, ovarian enlargement, headache, hot flushes, nausea, blurred vision, emotional irritability to mention a few. Severity of any of these side effects of clomid could be an indication to stop the medication.

It’s been confirmed that fertility drugs increase the chances of multiple pregnancies perhaps due to surge of FSH. Clomiphene is one of the common medications for treating infertility resulting from ovulation, and thus presents increased risks of multiple fetuses though somewhat less than other medications.

However, if your induction is handled and closely monitored by a competent and professional fertility doctor or specialist, as against general practice OB or GYNs, the risks of multiple fetuses can possibly be reduced.

On the other hand, poor monitoring of Clomid Ovulation Induction can cause fetal defects or abnormalities, even complication for the mom during conception and pregnancy.

Ovulation induction should be closely monitored. There are specialized equipments available in fertility clinics to effectively monitor all types of induction cycles. Regular exams are also necessary to check for possible side effects.

Importantly, don’t administer clomid for longer time than recommended. For instance, the possibility of increased risks of ovarian cancer in protracted clomid medication has compelled the recommendation that clomid medication should not be used for more than one year, and six months in some countries.

Some findings from epidemiological studies suggest that, using Clomid longer than a year may possibly give rise to increase in the incidence of ovarian tumors. Though this has not been confirmed by any extensive research, it should be noted however, for safety, when prescribing Clomiphene.

The possibilities of side effects increase with time and besides, clomid is believed to be most effective when used in the first 6 ovulatory cycles.

Peradventure any patient is confirmed unresponsive to clomid ovulation induction after up to 6 treatment cycles or the expected time frame, a discontinuation is advised. The good news is that there are alternatives to clomid failure. You fertility doctor will advise you on other alternative therapies for stimulating ovulation.
