You must have clinically confirmed your pregnancy, when you’re 5 weeks pregnant. Your baby’s size increases from a grain of rice to about the size of an apple seed at this stage. You may start to experience some symptoms during pregnancy week five.

By the time you’re 5 weeks pregnant, you may not look pregnant physically. However, the baby in embryo, in a form like a tadpole, starts developing rapidly at this stage.

Its heart is smaller than a poppy seed and it starts beating and pumping blood. The heart is dividing into chambers and taking shape.

The circulation system begins with these changes. It’s the first system in your baby to function, alongside with the heart.

Important organs like liver and kidneys begin to grow as well. The neural tube connecting the brain and spinal cord will close in this week. The upper and lower limbs will sprout and will form your baby’s arms and legs. The intestines will start developing.

An opening that will later form as mouth and small folds where neck and lower jaw will develop are also formed, at the time you’re in pregnancy week 5. Facial features are already forming. Your baby’s nostrils become more visible and eye’s retina is forming.

The beginning of major systems like brain, nervous and reproductive systems is underway during pregnancy week five. The three parts of the brains- the forebrain, mid brain and hindbrain will develop. Placenta and the amniotic sac are still forming at this stage. Your baby is now about 0.06 inches in length.

By the time you’re five weeks pregnant, your baby’s muscles and bones begin to develop. Its head and tail fold become discrete.

In pregnancy week 5, you possibly start experiencing pregnancy symptoms, which include:

  • Missed period
  • Tender or swollen breasts (due to multiplication of milk glands).
  • Nausea
  • Hunger
  • Increased vaginal secretions
  • Morning sickness
  • Need to urinate frequently
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

The symptoms vary from woman to woman and even from your previous pregnancy. Therefore, you need not worry, if you don’t experience any of these symptoms when you’re five weeks pregnant. However, if your pregnancy symptoms disappear suddenly, you should contact your health care professional.

Tips of Advice

You should have started practising healthy lifestyle and habits before the time you’re 5 weeks pregnant. If you’ve not, start now!

It’s advisable you avoid some pregnancy-unfriendly foods. Food borne illnesses like toxoplasmosis may cause birth defects. Hence, you need to avoid taking unpasteurized milk and cheese, processed meats, uncooked eggs, foods containing raw eggs and fish that contain high mercury content like king mackerel, swordfish and shark.

If you used to clean soiled cat litter boxes, please get someone to do the work for you, because soiled litter boxes can also spread Toxoplasmosis.

It’s crucial you likewise avoid pregnancy risk factors such as drinking alcohol and smoking. Taking alcohol even in small quantities and smoking can also harm your developing baby.

Though you can do exercises at the time you’re 5 weeks pregnant, but you’ll have to choose the exercises carefully preferably the ones that keep your heart rate lower than 135 bpm.

A physical examination by your family doctor or obstetrician is essential, even if you’ve confirmed your pregnancy with a home test.

If you’re over 35 or worried about any genetic conditions, you can talk to your doctor and get his/her advice towards having a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.
